Hidden among the mountains of the Pollino National Park, at about 630 meters above sea level, lies Calvera, a small village with just over 400 inhabitants. It is a place out of time, where unspoiled nature reigns supreme, and life flows at a slow and relaxed pace.
A mystery shrouds its origins: there are no definitive documents attesting to its founding, adding to the charm of this ancient village. Some suggest that its name derives from “Bell’aria” (beautiful air), due to its privileged position offering breathtaking views of the Serrapotamo Valley. Others believe it could be “Belmonte” (beautiful mountain), given its location at the foot of Monte Mancino. Alternatively, “Territorio calvo” (bald territory) could refer to the sparse vegetation that once characterized the area.
Despite the uncertainty about its past, Calvera boasts a rich and interesting history. Over the centuries, it came under the rule of various noble families, including the Sanseverinos and the Donnapernas, who left traces of their presence in the village’s architecture and local traditions.
