Carnival of Cirigliano

- The Procession of Months and Seasons -

“The Carnival of Cirigliano stages the intimate relationship between life and death, joy and pain, and is, in Basilicata, the one with the most tragic and earthy resonances.”

It’s defined as “rural” and tied to the cycle of the four seasons with the 12 months of the year embodied by as many “actors” – the inhabitants of the municipality – who parade through the streets of the village. The “Brave One,” personifying the Carnival coming to an end, is placed on a pyre and set on fire according to a precise ritual marked by the laments of the “Quaremma,” his widow. The Carnival celebrations that take place in many Lucanian municipalities constitute an important piece of the precious mosaic of traditions that make Basilicata a culturally diverse land.
