Carnival of Lavello

- Il Domino -

Red as passion, the Domino is the true protagonist of the Carnival of Lavello.

Its origin and ambiguous nature evoke an era when the game of seduction between man and woman was marked by precise rituals and behaviors: only during the dance, in fact, could young lovers approach each other hidden behind this mask. But the Domino also symbolizes a form of social upheaval in which lower and upper classes blend into the chaos of the festival. The carnival celebrations that take place in many Lucanian municipalities constitute an important piece of the precious mosaic of traditions that make Basilicata a culturally diverse land. Its location in the heart of Southern Italy has historically made it a crossroads of various currents and influences, which over time have amalgamated to give rise to entirely original forms of identity expression.
