Enzo didn’t leave to search for something, but because he found it. He found it by chance, one evening forty years ago, while strolling through the streets of San Mauro. Her name is Maria.
Maria’s father hailed from San Mauro, while her mother’s roots lay in Accettura. The family, however, had made London their home for many years, returning to their ancestral villages only during the summer holidays. Embracing the philosophy of carpe diem, Enzo packed his bags and embarked on a journey to London, marking the beginning of his new life with Maria. Their love, which endures to this day, is deeply intertwined with their shared affection for their homeland – a love that they have instilled in their three children.
Throughout our conversation, a visceral passion for San Mauro emerged, highlighting the profound significance of memory, the evocative power of sounds, images, and aromas that every emigrant carries within them “for the rest of their lives.”
