At the end of June, every year, for two consecutive days, the sunrise over Maratea has a different, more vibrant color. These are the days when Maratea celebrates the Madonna of Portosalvo.
There’s excitement in the air, the small port is coming alive, with many little boats pointed towards the sea, ready to cross the waters to Santojanni Island. The history of this religious festival has ancient origins and comes from the sea: the first brotherhood of sailors in Portosalvo was established in the second half of the 1500s, absorbing cultural influences from the ports of Naples and Palermo. The purpose that drives the spirit of the brotherhood is mutual assistance. Even today, after more than 500 years, the community of Maratea gathers, following this ancient spirit of brotherhood, in the name of a faith that is particularly evident in the sailors’ attitude towards the sea they navigate every day. This documentary reconstructs for the first time the phases that shape this religious cult and entrusts the Maratean sailors with the narration of their faith and passion.
