Barile boasts the oldest representation of the Via Crucis in Basilicata.
His story is part of the Church’s attempt to integrate the customs and rites of the Arbëreshë people into the Catholic cosmogony. Indeed, alongside the protagonists of the Scriptures, and more specifically those of the Crucifixion, appears the Gypsy woman, a symbol of lust and sin, but also an expression of the nomadism that has characterized Arbëreshë culture over the centuries. The characters in the procession are interpreted by ordinary men and women, members of the Barile community, who, in the name of faith and folklore, celebrate their deep attachment to their own history.
