The transhumance in Basilicata, a true tale

Nine months amidst pastures and traditions, uncovering the most authentic Basilicata.

Transhumance is an ancient pastoral rite almost as old as humanity itself and intimately tied to the migratory phenomenon.

As the seasons change, herders move the herds for which they are responsible towards the milder and more temperate pastures. In Italy, this practice presumably originated in the Abruzzo Apennines before spreading across the rest of the peninsula. Mario, Giovanni, Francesco, Gaetano, and Antonio are five head herdsmen who, in accordance with a tradition spanning generations, have been moving together with their herds from the valleys to the mountains of Basilicata for years. For nine months, we followed them, and this is the tale of their journey.”
