In Matera, on July 2nd, the papier-mâché statues aboard the Triumphal Chariot come to life.
During the Festa della Bruna in Matera, a magical atmosphere envelops the city. The triumphal cart, adorned with splendid papier-mâché statues, moves through the streets, accompanying the Madonna to the Cathedral, a moment filled with devotion and solemnity. But it is in the square that the most anticipated and vibrant rite takes place: in a whirlwind of contrasting emotions, the epic “Strazzo” unfolds, the assault on the triumphal cart which, having reached the culmination of its journey, is besieged by the crowd. In an explosion of enthusiasm and passion, the papier-mâché statues are torn off and lifted into the air, swaying among the people like in a ritual dance. The destruction of the cart thus becomes a symbol of rebirth and renewal, in a celebration that unites past and present, faith and collective joy. The “dancing statues” is a video narrative that fixes the moment when the inanimate merges with the crowd and from the crowd comes to life.
