Pasquale Mazza

Pietrapertosa

An example of how integration and respect for different cultures can create a better future for everyone.

Pasquale emigrated from Pietrapertosa at the age of 26 in 1989. Today, he lives in Castellamonte, a small town in Piedmont with 10,000 inhabitants, which he administers. In fact, Pasquale is the mayor of this town in the province of Turin, or as he puts it, “the first mayor from the south of Castellamonte.” In this conversation, his love for his hometown emerges, along with his passion for its traditions, which he describes with encyclopedic knowledge, and the typical dishes he never misses an opportunity to taste whenever he returns for the festivities. There is also a positive note about the future of Basilicata: the trend of depopulation afflicts all of Italy, not just the south. Yet, from his perspective, tourism in Basilicata has never been more thriving, and this awareness should be the starting point for the region to build its future.
